When you have the flu, slowing down and focusing on healing is key. Follow these tips to get to feeling better faster.
Stay home & rest
Resting and getting plenty of sleep is essential for quicker recovery from flu symptoms. Avoiding close contact with other people is important to preventing the spread of the flu.
Drink plenty of fluids
Drink water, soups, or electrolyte fluids to prevent dehydration. Eat healthy foods rich in vitamins and minerals and avoid junk food and alcohol.
Manage symptoms
Use fever reducers or pain relievers like Tylenol or Advil as directed by your provider. There are drugs your provider may prescribe for treating flu called “antivirals.” These drugs can make you better faster and may also prevent serious complications.
See your doctor if needed
Most people are able to recover from the flu without seeing their doctor. For high-risk individuals – young children, people 65 years and older, pregnant women, and people with suppressed immune systems, it’s important to see your doctor as soon as you notice symptoms.
Practice prevention
You can help prevent the spread of the flu virus by:
- Getting an annual flu vaccine
- Wearing a mask in public spaces
- Washing hands often with soap and water
- Wipe down frequently touched items with disinfectant wipes
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick
